The linux commands to do all that are a bit over my head, I'm hoping on either the Mac or QNAP side there is a way to reset the credentials without wiping the drive. I have read some similar issues related to this error for non QNAP backup systems (IE Seagates and other backup HDs) and it seem to be a permissions issue or credential related issue - some users have resolved by wiping the TM volume and starting over, others have resoled with detailed commands on the QNAP to reset permissions. A Mac cannot run a version of OS X or macOS that is older.

Once the restore is complete, you could download and install the latest version of macOS from the App Store (High Sierra and earlier) or from System Preferences (Mojave). I also do not see the share if I connect to the QNAP via SSH and browse the file structure.įrom the Time Machine dialog in OS X, I can see and select the share (so it is being advertised), and it seems to accept the credentials of "Time Machine" and "" - IE if I purposely put in the wrong password it will be rejected - so the credentials appear to work but I always end with the same OSStatus Error 2. This will erase your Mac and restore everything from your chosen backup, including the backed up version of macOS. However, when I log in from my Mac via SMB I do not see the TimeMachine share as accessible (this may be normal - I do not recall the prior behavior as I was not looking for it).

QNAP makes it easy with full support for Apple’s Time Machine. Since your QNAP doesn't run OS X 10.5.6 or newer, think a reliable Time Machine backup is what you don't have. Going with a NAS device allows you to provide backup to to every Mac in your house or place of business no matter where they are. Digging deeper, the time machine share volume is present on the QNAP, and the QNAP settings appear to be correct to share it as a time machine volume per the guidance Andre.K linked above. After you select the network disk in Time Machine preferences as a backup disk, Time Machine automatically connects to it when it’s time to backup or restore your data. A Network Attached Storage device can provide shared storage, a Time Machine backup target, and additional useful features for Mac, iPhone, and iPad users on a local area network and beyond I managed to extract the mount point using df, then tested it against a list of AFP mounted volumes sourced with mount 4 and is recommended for all.

I believe it either corresponded to an update of my system OS from High Sierra to Mojave, or an update of the QNAP firmware. I am having the same issue, which began a few weeks ago.
